Frequently Asked Questions

Blue Light and Sleep

Melatonin, also known as the 'sleep hormone', is produced by the brain's pineal gland. Melatonin is responsible for regulating sleep and wakefulness. After the sun sets and it starts to get dark, a signal is sent to our brain to start secreting melatonin which causes sleepiness and encourages us over time to drop into a deep sleep. After the sun sets, exposure to artificial blue light disrupts this evolutionary process of 'priming' you for sleep. This harmful light suppresses the release of melatonin as it signals your brain that it is still daylight, trying to keep you awake and alert.

Melatonin plays a significant role in our overall health, one of its key roles is to counteract stimulating energetic hormones such as cortisol in your system. When melatonin is high, cortisol will be low. This allows us to be in a low stress and relaxed state which promotes our body to obtain restful sleep and boosts cell regeneration. However, if melatonin is low (due to being suppressed from blue light), cortisol will remain high - keeping you energized and stimulated at night; thus, it disturbs your quality of sleep. Constant high cortisol equates to constant high stress, which will wreak havoc on the body! In this way, melatonin is necessary to maintain a regular and healthy body clock and sleep wake cycles.

Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum which falls within the 400-500nm range.

Blue light in the range of 400-450nm can cause eye damage such as macular degeneration. Blue and green light from 450-550nm has a direct effect on the brain's ability to secrete melatonin, with a lack of melatonin causing issues for us in both falling and staying asleep.

Today, we are surrounded by this harmful blue light from all artificial light sources. This includes computer screens, TVs, smart phones, tablets and conventional LED lighting in your home. While we refer to this harmful artificial light as 'blue light', this does not always mean the light you notice will appear visibly blue.

For more info on blue light and its effects please read our blog post on What is Blue Light?

Most people are completely unaware that the sources of artificial blue light are everywhere; in today's modern world, you simply cannot escape it. All modern devices which have a light source will produce some amount of blue light even if it doesn't appear to look noticeably blue.

In fact, all artificial, electric-powered devices which produce a light source will emit blue light to varying degrees, even if it doesn't look blue.

The most common sources of artificial blue light include:

  • Tablets such as iPads
  • Smartphones
  • Monitors from computers and laptops
  • LED and plasma TV screens
  • Fluorescent lighting in offices and stores
  • Conventional LED lighting in houses
  • The light inside your fridge

Melatonin (the sleep hormone) is produced by our brains which makes us fall and stay asleep.

Darkness causes the body to produce melatonin, which causes sleepiness, that signals the body that it is time to sleep.

Exposure to blue and green light at night suppresses the release of melatonin as it signals your brain that it is still daylight, trying to keep you awake and alert.

Reduction in melatonin makes it hard to fall asleep and/or stay asleep, drastically lowers sleep quality, and causes serious sleep disruption.

Quality sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind.

For more info on how blue light affects our sleep please see Why Does Blue Light Wake Us Up?

Getting sufficient quality sleep each night is essential for the health of our body and mind. We’re all familiar with the fatigue, irritability, and poor productivity the day after a late night or when we haven’t slept well. However, chronic lack of sleep has other negative health consequences.

When we are in a state of deep sleep, the body can rest, repair and heal. Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality have been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, memory loss, type-2 diabetes, and low-immunity. A chronic lack of sleep is also associated with increased production of the hunger hormone ghrelin and impaired insulin sensitivity. This results in poor blood sugar control, weight gain, difficulty losing weight despite dieting and exercising. No matter how well you eat or exercise, if you aren’t getting quality sleep none of this will matter and your health will suffer.

For more info on how why getting high quality sleep is very important please see Why Quality Sleep Is Essential For Optimal Health.

Blue Light and Eye Health

If you are working for prolonged periods of time on computer screens or under harsh artificial lighting during daytime hours, you are damaging your eyes from chronic exposure to harmful blue light.

Symptoms can manifest as digital eye strain, dry, itchy or irritated eyes, headaches and migraines, even loss of vision from macular degeneration.

For more info on how blue light can cause eye damage please see Does Blue Light Cause Eye Damage?

1. Use a on your phone –this significantly reduces your expose to the harmful blue light emitted when using your phone.

2. Use a set of quality set of blue light blocking glasses:

For daytime use we recommend our Blue Light Computer Glasses . These glasses use our special lens technology which blocks all the harmful range of blue light responsible for eye damage and eye strain, while still allowing the beneficial blue light through we need during the day for energy and positive mood - perfect for people who are using computers or other digital devices during the day.

For night-time use, we recommend our blue blocking glasses for night Our night-time blue blocking glasses are specially designed and manufactured to remove 100% of blue light and green light up to 550nm. These are the prefect blue light blocking glasses for watching movies at night, working on computers/tablets after sunset, or using other digital devices just before bedtime.

3. 20-20-20 Rule - after every 20 minutes of looking at a digital device, take a break for at least 20 seconds and look at something approx. 20 meters away. This has been shown to significantly reduce eye strain caused by prolonged exposure to electronic devices and minimize the damage that is being done to your overall eye health.

4. Position your computer screen approx. 25 inches from your face and angle the monitor about 10 - 15 degrees below eye level

Night-time Blue Light Blocking Glasses

BlockBlueLight's night-time sleep glasses have been specifically designed to block ALL the blue and green light wavelengths which are emitted from electronic devices and any artificial light sources. This includes smartphones, laptops, computer screens, LED and Plasma TVs, tablets, fluorescent lighting in offices and stores, and conventional LED lighting in homes.

This harmful blue and green light has been extensively researched, and has been proven to inhibit our body's ability to naturally produce melatonin, the brain's 'sleep hormone'.

When worn after the sun goes down, our night-time glasses block out ALL blue and green light, allowing your body to naturally wind down and prepare for sleep. This ensures you will fall asleep fast, stay sleep longer, and guarantees quality restful sleep.

BlockBlueLight's night-time sleep glasses give you the best of both worlds: you can still use phones, devices, tablets and watch your favourite TV shows, yet your sleep and health don't need to suffer. By effectively blocking blue and green light from a variety of sources you allow maximum melatonin production to occur, helping you to get the best night's sleep, and wake up full of energy.

NightFall Red Lenses - These block all light wavelengths of blue and green light up to 550nm. These are the exact wavelengths shown to most affect our internal clock, lower melatonin levels alter our sleep/wake cycle.

The NightFall Red Lenses not only block 100% of blue light but also all green light up to 550nm. Why block green light as well? Research and academic studies clearly show the green light emitted by modern electronic devices and light bulbs is also contributing to suppressing melatonin levels at night.

SunDown Amber Lens - The SunDown Amber lenses are an ideal option for people who are wanting a high quality premium blue blocking lens verified to block 100% of blue light, but prefer a lighter amber tint over our nightfall red lens.

The lighter amber tint allows for greater colour perception in the evening hours for a more pleasant viewing experience. These are a great option to use in the early evening while cooking dinner, watching TV, or out socialising.

Clear or yellow lenses are not sufficient for night use! - Any blue light lens that is clear or yellow will not be sufficient for night-time use. These types of lenses do not block enough of the blue light wavelengths to have positive impact on sleep and circadian rhythms. Even just a small amount of blue after dark will signal to the brain that it’s still daytime which in turn will suppress our sleep hormone melatonin from being released. This is why it’s extremely important to use a set of blue light glasses that have been verified to remove 100% of all the blue wavelengths or they will not be very effective at all.

There are many blue light blocking glasses available on the market making all sorts of different claims. We know that this can make purchasing a quality pair overwhelming and very confusing!

All of BlockBlueLight's night-time glasses have been extensively researched, scientifically designed and manufactured specifically using the best technology to ensure ALL of the wavelengths of harmful blue and green light are both being removed. Our glasses block blue and green light in line with peer reviewed academic literature.

A lot of the orange or red-tinted blue light glasses being sold are just simply that, red and orange-tinted glasses. Often suppliers have not properly designed the lens to ensure it is actually blocking the correct wavelengths of blue light, with no research or testing in these products' development. If this is the case, you aren't likely to notice any significant changes or benefits from these types of lenses.

There are also many other brands of blue light glasses are being sold that have clear lenses yet are still claiming to block various sources of blue light. Typically, these lenses are really only filtering out very small amounts of blue light. Common clear lens blue light glasses will only really be capable of filtering around 10% - 20% of blue light - slightly beneficial for eye strain but they will not have any benefits in preserving melatonin and improving quality of sleep.

We have our lenses tested by a laboratory grade spectrometer to ensure we are producing the very best lenses which effectively block all blue light. You can see our lens testing reports here. We are confident that you won't find better quality blue light blocking glasses on the market.

Many glasses that claim to be blue light blocking glasses on the market are just cheap glasses with an insufficient blue light reflective coating applied to them. These cheap glasses only filter anywhere from 5-15% of blue light. No science has gone into creation of blue light lens to ensure its blocking blue light in line with peer reviewed academic literature for sufficient protection.

BlockBlueLight's Blue Light Glasses are evidence based, science backed, and align with the academic research on blue light. We use a special pigment embedded into the lens which absorbs the blue light as it passes through (instead of just a basic reflective coating), this ensures our blue light lenses block 100% of all the blue and green light up to 550nm which is the exact wavelengths of light shown in the research to lower our melatonin levels and impact our sleep.

BlockBlueLight shows its lens reports for each lens on our website. Located under each individual product. No other company will show you their lens reports as they have something to hide, we do not and are happy to share these with you.

BlockBlueLight Glasses are also made with top quality acetate frames with spring hinges and top of the line optical grade CR-39 lenses . We are confident that you won't find better quality blue light blocking glasses on the market.

We do not recommend using the night-time glasses during the day as this will create a circadian mismatch and will actually cause issues with sleep later in the evening. Using night-time glasses during the day with be very harmful and will actually be detrimental to your health. Let me give you a bit more detail as to why:

Our night-time glasses block 100% of blue light, and when your brain receives no blue light signals it assumes its night-time so it will start to prepare you for sleep even if it’s the middle of the day. So having these glasses on during the daytime will leave you feeling tired, unmotivated, sleepy, and your brain will be very confused as to what’s going on!

Over time a lack of blue light during the day will lead to low energy and motivation, and will create a circadian rhythm mismatch, so you want to make sure you’re not blocking it all out during the day!

We need healthy amounts of blue light during the day as its responsible for making us feel awake, motivated and alert. The issue we have is we get far too much blue light during the day as modern lighting, screens, and devices, as they emit very unnatural levels of blue light, so we need to bring it back into balance and that’s were our daytime glasses help.

Our daytime glasses allow the healthy wavelengths of blue light through to allow you to feel awake and alert, and filter down the harmful wavelengths that cause eye damage, headaches, and eye strain.

The key here is to target the exact wavelengths of blue light that lighting and screens emit the most, this is 455nm. Our glasses have been designed to filter the 455nm range of blue light by 50% with our ScreenTime clear lens, and 100% with our DayMax yellow lens, whereas most daytime blue light glasses will only filter blue light up to 430nm, and filter none at all at 455nm making them very ineffective!

So be sure to look for the exact specifications of blue light filtering when getting daytime glasses.

Then at night-time we need to make sure we block ALL blue light, as any amount getting through is enough of a signal to the brain that it’s still daytime, so our sleep hormone melatonin will be suppressed and you will have lower sleep quality, trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep, or all of these issues. So ensuring the glasses you use are blocking 100% of blue light is key for night-time!

Once the sun has set and your being exposed to any artificial light source we strongly recommend wearing our night-time blue light glasses.

These glasses should stay on from the point of sunset up until going to bed. This allows your brain to recognise that its night-time and to start to wind down for sleep, this cannot happen in the presence of any blue or green light.

Wearing the night-time glasses as soon as it gets dark will ensure maximum melatonin release which will then ensure you obtain deepest and most restful sleep.

Daytime Blue Light Computer Glasses

ScreenTime Clear Lens - These filter 50% of blue light across all of the blue light spectrum (400nm-500nm), this will help eliminate digital eye strain, sore and tired eyes, headaches/migraines, and blurred vision from both screen time and bright LED or fluorescent lighting.

More specifically they filter 50% of blue light right at 455 nanometers which is the most energetic, damaging light emitted from screens, LEDs, and other modern artificial lighting. By filtering 50% of blue light at 455nm makes our ScreenTime Computer Glasses the most effective clear lens computer glasses available

DayMax Yellow Lens - These filter 70% of blue light across all of the blue light spectrum (400nm-500nm), these provide maximum daytime protection and are prefect for people who are light sensitive or are on screens most of the day or under harsh artificial lighting all day.

More specifically they block 100% of blue light in the lower range of the spectrum at 400 – 455nm; this is the most energetic and damaging light emitted from screens and modern lighting. More importantly they still allow all the beneficial blue light through which is in the higher part of the blue light spectrum from 455 - 500nm, this light is essential for maintaining high energy, positive mood, and motivation.

Our ScreenTime Computer Glasses filter 50% light ranging from 400 to 500 nanometers. What sets ours glasses apart from all the other computer glasses is our ClearBlue lens technology; this filters 50% of blue light at 455 nanometers, this is where the most energetic, damaging light emitted from screens, LED’s, and other modern artificial lighting; Most companies supplying clear blue blocking glasses are only blocking 5% - 15% of blue light and are not blocking any at the 455nm range where it matters the most!

We have specially designed our clear lenses in a unique way that the most harmful wave lengths of blue light are blocked which causes eye strain, headaches, migraines, and macular degeneration, and at the same time still providing crystal clear vision without any color distortion

We also have our DayMax Glasses range which provide even greater daytime protection. These have a light-yellow tint and block 100% of the harmful blue light emitted from screens and lighting, while still allowing the beneficial natural blue light through we need for energy and mood.

Many glasses that claim to be blue light blocking glasses on the market are just cheap glasses with an insufficient blue light reflective coating applied to them. These cheap glasses only filter anywhere from 5-15% of blue light which is not sufficient. No science has gone into creation of blue light lens to ensure its blocking blue light in line with peer reviewed academic literature.

All of BlockBlueLight's Blue Light Glasses are evidence based, science backed, and align with the academic research on blue light. We use a special pigment embedded into the lens which absorbs the blue light as it passes through (instead of just a basic reflective coating), this allows our ScreenTime clear lens computer glasses to filter 50% of blue light and specifically target 50% of blue light at 455nm, and our DayMax yellow lens to block 100% of the damaging blue light from 400-455nm, while still allowing all the beneficial blue light from 460 - 500nm through.

455nm is the most damaging wavelengths of blue light emitted from modern screens and lighting so a clear lens needs to be filtering this by at least 50%, and a yellow lens should be blocking 100% of this harmful blue light wavelength for maximum protection.

BlockBlueLight shows its lens reports for each lens on our website. Located under each individual product. No other company will show you their lens reports as they have something to hide, we do not and are happy to share these with you.

Daytime glasses will not be effective for use at night-time and will not provide any benefits for sleep. To be effective and help with sleep, night-time blue blocking glasses MUST block 100% of blue light, or even better would be 100% of blue and green light up to 550nm. This is because any amount of blue light at night is a signal to the brain that its daytime and the sun is up. Daytime glasses don’t block all blue light, they are only designed to filter it down to more natural daytime levels.

If you’re wanting to allow yourself to truly wind down and relax in the evening and then get deep and restful sleep, a pair of night-time blue blocking glasses is essential

Yes, we have our complete glasses range available in prescription glasses and readers glasses. We can make any custom prescription including progressive/varifocal lenses. On each glasses product page, there is a selector to choose prescription glasses, you then choose if you want single vision or progressive/multifocal lenses and whether you would like standard lenses or thin and light lenses. There is then a place for you to upload your script as well. Then checkout and place your order. From here our optics lab will take care of the rest getting you custom prescription glasses made for you.

Alternatively we have created our fit-over range of daytime blue light computer glasses which have been specifically designed for this reason. This allows you to put our lightweight fit-over glasses over the top of your glasses to provide you with the best blue light protection. You can continue to wear your existing reading or prescription glasses, and our fit-over glasses will nicely fit over them and provide maximum protection against blue light.

Our daytime blue light computer glasses are very different to the add on blue light filter offered by optometrists to put on your prescription lenses. Our ScreenTime clear lens glasses filter blue light by 50% across the whole blue light spectrum and specifically target blue light at 455nm, and for greater protection or DayMax yellow lens completely blocks 100% of the damaging 455nm blue light spike, this is the peak wavelength of blue light emitted from screens and lighting, there is not many blue light glasses for daytime use on the market that do that.

Most computers glasses and coatings applied to prescription lenses filter blue light up to 430nm and none at 455nm so they are pretty useless! The problem with the filter on the prescription lenses if you ask the optometrist the specs of the filter they wouldn’t have a clue, they just call its a generic “blue light filter” with no details at all! I can guarantee you these won't be filtering any blue light past 430nm, as to filter past 430nm you need a pigment embedded in the lens to absorb the blue light, the coating they apply just reflects blue light and that type of coating cant reflect blue light past 430nm.

Not all blue light glasses are created equal so do your research before buying some to ensure they provide adequate protection.

Blue Light Free Lighting & Bulbs

BlockBlueLight's LED bulbs have transformed the common LED bulb to now be complexly safe and healthy for us. Our bulbs have been specifically designed and manufactured to block 100% of harmful light wavelengths that will interfere with melatonin being released. We have also incorporated an advanced driver to make the light completely flicker free; normal LED bulbs produce flicker which is causes headaches, migraines and eye strain. Our bulbs are also low EMF to ensure we are not also being exposed to harmful radiation.

Our Sweet Dreams amber bulbs are guaranteed to block all blue light wavelengths up to 500nm, and our Twilight red light Bulbs all blue and green light wavelengths up to 570nm

Several top lighting manufacturers have introduced night-time bulbs that have lower blue light output and label these are "warm white", however these bulbs have not been designed with removing enough of the blue light spectrum, they still emit high amounts of blue light which will still cause melatonin suppression, and still have a lot of light flicker causing headaches and eye strain.

Only BlockBlueLight's bulbs are guaranteed to be 100% blue-free, 100% flicker free, and low EMF.

Conventional LED bulbs are bad for us yes, but all of BlockBlueLight's lighting products are not the same as conventional LED lighting.

Common LED lighting you will find in most homes is bad for our health for two main reasons; They have a very high spike in the Blue light range and are void of any of the yellow orange or red colors. This high intensity of blue light is very far from natural balanced light you find in nature, it can cause eye damage, eye strain, headaches, and migraines. It is also responsible for causing sleep disruption by suppressing the sleep hormone melatonin.

Secondly Conventional LEDs produce flicker, while it may not be visible to the human eye, the LED lights are flashing on and off hundreds of times a second, the brain can recognize this flicker even if you can’t, which can then lead to eyestrain, headaches, loss in concentration, and even damage to our eyes!

All of BlockBlueLight's lighting products be extensively research, designed, and manufactured to remove these harmful aspects of LED lighting. All our bulbs contain zero blue light wavelengths and is the only LED available that does not include the blue color spectrum at all. All our lighting products are low EMF and eliminate harmful flicker, providing a smooth, constant light that's better for your health!

Be very careful with cheap colored light bulbs, while these appear to look like pure orange or red light they are not. We have measured these with a laboratory grade spectrometer and have shown they still emit significant levels of blue light. Even a small amount of blue light can disrupt your circadian rhythms. The cheap bulbs are just colored shell to make normal light appear a different color such as red or orange. There’s no testing or specific designing gone into these bulbs to remove 100% the harmful blue and green spectrum of light.

Cheaper light bulbs will without a doubt will also have flicker which is been shown to cause migraines, damage the eyes and even may affect our nervous systems over time.

All of BlockBlueLight's lighting products are only emitting a particular beneficial wavelength of light, produce zero flicker, and are low EMF. All our lighting products are spectrum tested and are guaranteed to have 100% no blue light (and green light for the red lights). We also provide the exact light spectrum reports of each light bulb to show you the exact wavelengths being emitted.

We developed the SweetDreams Bulb to be a more general-purpose bulb to use throughout the home to replace most 60+ watt bulbs, they provide sufficient brightness and color while still removing 100% of the harmful blue light. This is a great solution to swap out most of the bulbs in your house, they give of a nice warm relaxing amber light yet still fully protect against harmful blue light.

The Twilight Bedtime Red Bulb is a slightly dimmer light with not only all the blue light removed but also all the green light removed. These are great to use in reading lamps, bedrooms and bathroom, or anywhere you wind down in the evening in the last few hours before bed, they still provide plenty of light to read and see and give off a sunset deep orange to red glow. They are the ultimate bulb for ensuring the best possible sleep!

Having a combination of both the red light bulbs and amber light bulbs in your home is ideal. The amber bulbs are great to use in your overhead lighting throughout the home, and in areas of the home where having brighter light is favorable, then the red-light bulbs are great to use in the final hours before bed when your winding down and relaxing for the evening such as reading lamps, bedrooms, kids rooms etc

Yes absolutely, we have designed these bulbs to be a general use light bulb for all areas of the home, they provide sufficient light for living areas and bedrooms, but also give off a warm, relaxing, soft light making them suitable for reading lamps and nurseries.

Because eliminating blue light at night is so important, you should use the SweetDreams bulbs in any room you or your family typically spend evening and night hours.

Ideally, you would turn off your lights and keep your room as dark as possible during sleep. However, if you are uncomfortable sleeping with the lights off, we recommend using our Red Night Lights which have been designed to provide very low wattage and just enough dim light to take the darkness out of the room, and these can safely be kept on while sleeping.

Our light bulbs are not suitable to be used with dimmer switches or to be dimmed. This is by design, because when LED bulbs are dimmed and are not running at full brightness it significantly increases the amount of flicker from the light, it also creates high EMF levels being emitted from the bulbs. We have designed our light bulbs to be flicker free and low EMF, so to not compromise this we have made them non dimmable.

We do have our flicker free NoBlue Amber Lamp, Twilight Red Light Lamp, and the NoBlue Book Light, which have 3 brightness settings which make a suitable light source to use if you would like to raise and lower the brightness of the light.

Red Light Therapy

Red and near-infrared light therapy works by increasing mitochondrial energy production in cells. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The specific photons in red and near-infrared light interact with a cellular photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction enhances mitochondrial efficiency, increasing ATP production and improving cellular function. Enhanced cellular energy leads to better performance and health throughout the body.

Infrared saunas emit a different spectrum of wavelengths primarily focused on generating heat. They use mid and far-infrared wavelengths (IR-B and IR-C), which primarily heat the skin's surface and the top layer of the skin. In contrast, red light therapy devices emit red and near-infrared wavelengths (IR-A) with high concentration, which penetrate deeper into the subcutaneous tissue and enhance mitochondrial function. This results in improved energy production within cells, promoting overall vitality without significant heat generation.

For effective red light therapy, position yourself 15 to 50 cm away from the light source. The duration of each session should be between 10 to 20 minutes. The closer the light source is to your body, the more intense the irradiation power, which can shorten the required treatment time. Conversely, increasing the distance will reduce the irradiation power but cover a larger area, necessitating longer sessions. Adjust the distance based on the area being treated and your individual response to the therapy.

Red light therapy can be utilized at any time during the day. Many users find morning sessions beneficial as it can help energize and prepare them for the day. Additionally, red light therapy can be used before or after workouts to enhance performance and aid in recovery. The flexibility of red light therapy allows you to incorporate it into your routine at a time that best suits your schedule and needs.

Yes, red light therapy is beneficial year-round, including during the summer. While summer provides natural sunlight, red light therapy offers controlled exposure to beneficial wavelengths without the risks associated with UV radiation. It can also prepare the skin for UV exposure, making it more resistant to sunburn. Furthermore, red light therapy aids in muscle recovery, joint health, and overall performance, which is valuable for maintaining fitness and health during the summer months.

While natural sunlight offers benefits, it's not always practical to spend sufficient time in the sun, especially with clothing limitations and unpredictable weather. Red light therapy provides a concentrated form of beneficial wavelengths that can be easily integrated into your daily routine at home. It delivers consistent and targeted light exposure, ensuring therapeutic benefits without the variability of sunlight. Additionally, red light therapy can be used regardless of weather conditions or seasonal changes, offering a reliable and convenient alternative to sun exposure.

Yes, it is possible to overdose on light. Red light therapy follows a biphasic dose-response, where too little light has minimal effect, the optimal dose provides maximum benefits, and excessive light diminishes the positive effects. To avoid overdosing, adhere to the recommended guidelines: position yourself 15 to 50 cm from the light for 10 to 20 minutes per area. Monitor your individual response and adjust the distance or session duration as needed. Everyone's sensitivity to light varies, so it's important to find the balance that works best for you.

The red light is absorbed primarily by the skin and hair, providing superficial benefits like improved skin health and a youthful appearance. In contrast, the near-infrared spectrum penetrates deeper into the subcutaneous tissue, reaching organs, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even the brain. This deeper penetration allows NIR to enhance cellular energy production, support tissue repair, and improve overall function of the targeted areas.

Both types of light are often used together because they work synergistically to enhance overall benefits. However, they can also be used separately depending on the desired outcome. For evening therapy sessions, using the near infrared light alone is preferable as it lacks the stimulating effect of the visible red light, making it more suitable for night-time use.

LEDs emitting near-infrared light appear off because this light is invisible to the human eye. Although you may not see the light, the LEDs are functioning and delivering therapeutic energy as designed. Near-infrared light (800-900nm) is just beyond the visible spectrum (400-700nm), so you might see a faint pinkish hue or a small pink dot, indicating that the LEDs are working properly and providing effective treatment.

Yes, children can use red light therapy as they have the same mitochondrial function as adults. However, it is recommended to use shorter sessions and maintain a greater distance from the light source. Typically, sessions should last 5 to 15 minutes from a distance of 25 to 50 cm. As with any new treatment, consult a healthcare provider before starting therapy for children and ensure adult supervision during use.

Consult a healthcare provider before using red light therapy during pregnancy or while nursing, as there is limited clinical research in these areas. Dr. Michael Hamblin, a leading scientist in light therapy, suggests potential benefits for both mother and baby due to the presence of stem cells, but professional medical advice is essential.

Yes, eye protection is recommended, especially when facing the light directly. BlockBlueLight's devices are very bright, and the provided safety goggles should be worn to protect your eyes from the intense light. While modest amounts of red and NIR LED light may benefit certain eye conditions, it is important not to stare directly into the LEDs.

No, BlockBlueLight panels are not certified for use inside saunas. Additionally, light therapy is less effective when the body is covered in sweat, as a non-thermal setting is required for optimal red light therapy results.

Beam angle affects how light intensity decreases over distance. A wide beam angle (e.g., 90 degrees) disperses light quickly, reducing power density over distance, which is not ideal for therapeutic use. Conversely, a narrow beam angle (e.g., 30 degrees) can cause discomfort and potential safety issues due to concentrated light intensity. BlockBlueLight Panels use a 60-degree beam angle, striking a balance that ensures therapeutic power density at further distances while maximizing comfort and safety.

Near-infrared light can penetrate clothing to some extent, but red light cannot effectively penetrate clothing. For best results, expose clean, bare skin to the light whenever possible.
